Announcing the 2018-2020 Social Justice Institute Cohort

The BCRW Social Justice Institute is thrilled to welcome the 2018-2020 cohort, with Artist-in-Residence La Vaughn Belle, Researcher-in-Residence Mariame Kaba, Activist-in-Residence CeCe McDonald, and returning Researcher-in-Residence Andrea J. Ritchie.

Artist-in-Residence

Belle is best known for working with the coloniality of the Virgin Islands, both in its past relationship to Denmark and its present one with the United States. As an Artist in Residence, Belle will explore the space of liminality created after the sale and transfer of the Virgin Islands from Denmark to the US as this relates to the Harlem Renaissance and the Virgin Islanders who became key agents in this movement. Belle is also interested in what can be learned from this movement at a time when the Virgin Islanders remain on an unfulfilled path toward full citizenship–still unable to vote and without a voting representative in Congress. Mariame Kaba

Mariame Kaba
Researcher-in-Residence

Kaba is an organizer, educator and curator who is active in movements for racial, gender, and transformative justice. As a Researcher in Residence, Kaba will work with Andrea J. Ritchie, fellow Researcher in Residence, on a new SJI initiative, Interrupting Criminalization: Research in Action. Combining participatory research, data analysis, and systemic advocacy, Ritchie and Kaba will work in partnership with local campaigns to identify primary pathways, policing practices, charges, and points of intervention to address the growing criminalization and incarceration of women and LGBTQ people of color for public order, survival, drug, child welfare and self-defense related offenses. Learn more.

CeCe McDonaldCece McDonald

Activist-in-Residence

CeCe McDonald is an artist and activist committed to dismantling the prison industrial complex (PIC) and winning the liberation of all oppressed people. As an Activist in Residence, CeCe will continue her critical work building abolitionist analysis with other activists and community members to dismantle the prison industrial complex; support transformative justice models and other responses to harm that do not rely on incarceration or the criminal legal system; and build up community support and power for trans women, particularly trans women of color, in cultural, activist, and community projects. One of the projects CeCe will focus on during her residency will be a curriculum for activists and educators to incorporate into their courses called More Than Cisters: Building a Trans Queer Feminist Perspective. Learn more.

Andrea Ritchie

Andrea J. Ritchie
Researcher-in-Residence

Through research, writing, legal services, and organizing, Andrea J. Ritchie has dedicated the past two decades to challenging abusive and discriminatory policing against women, girls, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of color. Over the past two years, as a Researcher in Residence on Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Criminalization, Andrea J. Ritchie has made significant contributions to expanding and deepening conversations and movements around policing and mass incarceration. Over the next two years, Ritchie will work with Mariame Kaba, fellow Researcher in Residence, on a new SJI initiative, Interrupting Criminalization: Research in Action.
