{"id":473,"date":"2015-11-03T17:37:31","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T17:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bcrw.barnard.edu\/digitalshange\/blog\/?p=473"},"modified":"2015-11-12T20:23:47","modified_gmt":"2015-11-12T20:23:47","slug":"on-to-the-schomburg-blackarchives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bcrw.barnard.edu\/digitalshange\/blog\/?p=473","title":{"rendered":"On to the Schomburg! #BlackArchives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hope everyone is having a bit of a breather this long weekend. \u00a0 Our next class meets at the Schomburg Center for African-American Culture to introduce you to the wealth of resources at the Schomburg and continue the discussion of archival practice Shannon started with us during Ntozake&#8217;s visit. \u00a0I&#8217;d like us to follow the plan for the original visit, which was to read around in the &#8220;Black Sexism&#8221; special issue of <i>The Black Scholar<\/i>. \u00a0You don&#8217;t have to read it from cover to cover, but certainly look at\u00a0enough to get a sense of the nature of the controversy in its time. Tiana wrote a blogpost on the <a href=\"http:\/\/bcrw.barnard.edu\/digitalshange\/blog\/2015\/10\/15\/bad-girls-in-three-parts-reading-the-black-sexism-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Sexism debate<\/a> when we were supposed to have visited the Schomburg in October. You can find both a link and full PDF on Courseworks.<\/p>\n<p>We are extremely fortunate to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/staff-profiles\/steven-fullwood\" target=\"_blank\">Steven G. Fullwood<\/a>,\u00a0Assistant Curator for the Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division, as our collaborator and archival guide. \u00a0Steven has vast experience in acquiring, managing and promoting the use of\u00a0archives from groups whose lives can escape the radar of traditional archival practice. Under his stewardship, the Schomburg has developed a robust &#8220;In the Life Archive\u201d which\u00a0acquires and preserves\u00a0historical materials created by and about queer life of people of African descent. \u00a0He is most recently co-editor of the anthology,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vepress.com\/index.php?page=book&amp;id=17\" target=\"_blank\">Black Gay Genius: Answering Joseph Beam&#8217;s Call<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which is a finalist for a\u00a0Lambda literary award<em>. <\/em>You can read an interview with Steven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2015\/05\/01\/steven-fullwood-black-gay-genius\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Steve suggests looking at a 1989 episode of the Phil Donohue show on Black Women Writers\u00a0featuring Ntozake, Maya Angelou, Angela Davis and Alice Walker&#8211; a rare moment of mainstream media attention to Black women intellectuals\u00a0that shows how visceral the debate was years after <i>for colored girls . . .<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Ntozake Shange&#8217;s main archive is here at Barnard (yeay!), but Steven will introduce us to other collections related to topics\/people we have covered in class, such as the Michelle Wallace,\u00a0 Larry Neal and Umbra collections.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Schomburg is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Barnard+College,+3009+Broadway,+New+York,+NY+10027\/Schomburg+Center+for+Research+in+Black+Culture,+515+Malcolm+X+Boulevard,+New+York,+NY+10037\/@40.8042988,-73.9740396,14z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c2f622ae1b5be9:0x92f2eb8d18e50bc3!2m2!1d-73.9639386!2d40.8091005!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c2f676c762ebed:0x74444bd477cfdf28!2m2!1d-73.9409014!2d40.8146162!3e3\" target=\"_blank\">on Malcolm X at 135th street <\/a>(across from Harlem Hospital)<\/p>\n<div>515 Malcolm X Blvd, New York, NY 10037. \u00a0The closest transportation is 2\/3 and M7 bus.
