(Click the photo).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Welcome Back to &#8220;The Worlds of Ntozake Shange &amp; Digital Storytelling&#8221;! On Monday we\u2019ll start a new phase of our adventure. \u00a0We talked about how Zake moved knowledge from the body to the page\/stage; how do we move &#8220;carnal intellectuality&#8221; to the visual and the digital? \u00a0We\u2019ve talked (and felt) a lot about art and various forms of embodiment;\u00a0this semester we\u2019ll begin talking more about visuality\u2014both about how we make stories from objects\/things we see and how we read differently when we see text on screen as opposed to a book or paper. \u00a0How do we make visual knowledges that come with motion, that\u00a0emerge from connections between people, and that reside in everyday acts like cooking or everyday objects that are not usually recorded?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve also been given some exposure to the Black Arts Movement and Ntozake Shange&#8217;s place as a feminist &#8220;Daughter of the Black Arts Movement.&#8221; I hope this has given you a framework through which you can\u00a0make some sense of your archives.<\/p>\n<p>Our first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Center for Photography <\/a>(ICP) \u00a0session will introduce us to the space and launch us into a new arena of discussion\u00a0. We have the amazing fortune that artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icp.org\/users\/bradlydevertreadaway\" target=\"_blank\">Bradly Treadaway<\/a>,\u00a0who is co-teaching the class this semester, \u00a0has an interest in African-American photography, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roy_DeCarava\" target=\"_blank\">Roy DeCarava<\/a>, whose photographic collaboration with Langston Hughes, <em>The S<\/em><em>weet Flypaper of Life,\u00a0<\/em>inspired Shange\u2019s collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kamoinge.com\/main.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Kamoinge group<\/a>, <em>The<\/em> S<em>weet Breath\u00a0of Life.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/sites\/default\/files\/rubenstein\/users\/lisa.mccarty\/tumblr_m8ad8nmnrG1qek8f0o1_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"331\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original cover of The Sweet Fly Paper of Life From the Duke University Library.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After we get an introduction to ICP, he\u00a0will lead a lecture\/discussion on these two texts (the selections are available on our <a href=\"https:\/\/courseworks.columbia.edu\/portal\/site\/AFENX3815_001_2015_3\/page\/d21a548d-3bd5-4495-9e6d-e7a62f0f539a\" target=\"_blank\">OLD courseworks site,<\/a> which we will keep using all semester).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ASSIGNMENTS FOR MONDAY:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>READ\u00a0selections from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Langston Hughes and Roy DeCarava, <em>The Sweet Flypaper of Life\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0(Courseworks)<\/li>\n<li>Ntozake Shange and Kamoinge, <em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Sweet Breath of Life \u00a0<\/em>(Courseworks)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>LOOK\u00a0at some online exhibits (student or professional) and choose one that stands out for you as intriguing, interesting, surprising or compelling. \u00a0I&#8217;d prefer you to put the link in comments to this post, but hold onto it for later. You can find one on your own through googling or start with some of the links below:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goinnorth.org\/\">The Great Migration and Philadelphia<\/a>&#8221; is by a class that was somewhat of an inspiration for WS&amp;DS.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hofstra.edu\/library\/libspc\/libspc_online_collections.html\">Special Collections Department at Hofstra University <\/a>keeps a page of exhibits that use their collection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michellemoravec.com\/\">Michelle Moravec<\/a> is a Feminist Digital Humanist who works on the development of women&#8217;s cultures and is particularly interested in cross-racial feminist dialogue\u00a0(hmm, is there something about the name Michelle?). Her <a href=\"http:\/\/march.rutgers.edu\/author\/mmoravec\/\" target=\"_blank\">blogposts \u00a0<\/a>frequently highlight\u00a0feminist work on the web.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blackatbrynmawr.blogs.brynmawr.edu\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black at Bryn Mawr<\/a> group has a couple of archivally based digital projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativebloq.com\/web-design\/examples-wordpress-11121165\" target=\"_blank\">These<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awwwards.com\/websites\/wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\">sites<\/a> have been recognized for excellent use of WordPress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/omeka.org\/showcase\/\">These sites <\/a>were chosen by\u00a0Omeka for excellent use of their software.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MONDAY CLASS ARRANGEMENTS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget class will meet at\u00a0ICP\u00a0(1114 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036). Please gather in the main entrance lobby. \u00a0Class will begin at\u00a02pm. It doesn&#8217;t take an hour to get there, but because of likely weather conditions, I will give myself extra time. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If you will want to travel with me, say so in the comments and meet me in the lobby of Barnard Hall at 1pm.<\/span>\u00a0 We had hopes that Sarah could get the MTA cards by Monday morning, but that is looking unlikely with the blizzard.
