When we were breaking all the old hierarchies.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Marge Piercy, <em>Woman on the Edge of Time<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are impossible people&#8230; We\u2019re being told that we\u2019re politically unviable and impossible, we\u2019re told that constantly, and yet I think there\u2019s a space of possibility that exists in part because we are not yet included or recognized.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Dean Spade, \u201cTrans Politics on a Neoliberal Landscape\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Utopia challenges us to imagine the impossible. Feminists have for years spoken of dreams, of excess, of revolution. Creating a space outside of what society makes available can be an act of survival in a culture that selectively grants and withholds the designation of full humanity. While many have shied away from the term \u201cutopia,\u201d wary of its uses as a cover for eugenics and other distinctly dystopian endeavors, this year\u2019s Scholar &#038; Feminist Conference argues that there is a consistent power that comes from confronting our desire\u2013our \u201cappetites and hunger\u201d\u2013for \u201cspaces of possibility,\u201d making \u201cwomen\u2019s long revolution\u2026 breaking all the old hierarchies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In concert with this theme, the conference format this year focuses on participation and collaboration. We\u2019ll kick off the weekend with a <a href=\"http:\/\/bcrw.barnard.edu\/event\/utopia-opening-night-wildness\/\" title=\"link to opening night information\">screening of Wu Tsang and Roya Rastegar\u2019s film <em>Wildness<\/em><\/a>, a magical and explosive exploration of \u201csafe space,\u201d queer community, creativity, and class, followed by a conversation with the filmmakers. In Saturday\u2019s workshops, community leaders from a wide range of fields facilitate opportunities for creativity and organizing through discussion and brainstorming. Workshop topics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>community design<\/li>\n<li>coalition &#038; justice<\/li>\n<li>remix culture<\/li>\n<li>open education<\/li>\n<li>feminist parenting<\/li>\n<li>sci-fi\/fantasy<\/li>\n<li>prison abolition ending poverty<\/li>\n<li>desiring change<\/li>\n<li>climate change<\/li>\n<li>food justice<\/li>\n<li>intentional housing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plenary presentations will be collaboratively produced and will intertwine academic, activist and artistic work and presentation-styles. Shaowen Bardzell, a pioneer in the field of feminist Human Computer Interaction, pairs with visual artist Youngsuk Altieri to present a feminist vision for the future of our lived environment. Pam McMichael of the Highlander Center teams up with social justice printmaker Melanie Cervantes of Dignidad Rebelde to show us what coalitional organizing could be at its best.
