Hortense Spillers considers the aftermath of the notion of <\/span>partus sequitur ventrem<\/span><\/i>\u2014the \u201cAmerican \u2018innovation\u2019 that proclaimed that the child born of an enslaved mother would also be enslaved.\u201d In her fall lecture, “Shades of Intimacy: Women in the Time of Revolution,” she deepens this ongoing exploration by engaging the idea of the \u201cshadow\u201d family as one of the tectonic shifts in the concept and practice of social relations in the New World from the 18th century forward. She is the editor (along with Marjorie Pryse) of\u00a0<\/span>Conjuring: Black Women, Fiction, and Literary Tradition<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(1985) and\u00a0<\/span>Comparative American Identities: Race, Sex, and Nationality in the Modern Text<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(1991).
