Jafa&#8217;s work in TNEG Film Studio (the studio he runs together with co-creators Elissa Blount Moorhead and Malik Sayeed) seeks to create a black cinema that equals the \u201cpower, beauty and alienation of black music.\u201d Against the contemporary backdrop of the painful insights brought to our nation\u2019s attention by Black Lives Matter, Jafa\u2019s work continues the enduring effort to establish a restorative aesthetic horizon, one capable of rendering the full complexity of black lives. The event will showcase three of Jafa&#8217;s most recent film: <em>Dreams are Colder than Death, Love is the Message, and Apex<\/em>. He studied Architecture and Film at Howard University from 1978 to 1982. He is a principal member, along with Malik Hassan Sayeed and Elisa Blount Moorhead, of\u00a0TNEG\u2122, a film company. He has directed numerous films:\u00a0<em>Slowly This\u00a0<\/em>(1995),\u00a0<em>Smile<\/em> (1997),\u00a0<em>Black Millenium\u00a0<\/em>(1999),\u00a0<em>Tree\u00a0<\/em>(2000),\u00a0<em>Yellowjacket<\/em> (2001),\u00a0<em>Deshotten 1.0<\/em> (2009),\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Dreams Are Colder Than Death\u00a0<\/em>(2014), selected for the 2014 New York Film Festival. His cinematography includes:\u00a0<em>Daughters of the Dust<\/em>\u00a0directed by Julie Dash<em>\u00a0<\/em>(1991), winner of the cinematography award at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival; <em>Seven Songs for Malcolm X<\/em> directed by John Akomfrah (1993);\u00a0<em>Crooklyn\u00a0<\/em>directed by Spike Lee (1994); <em>A Litany for Survival: Audre Lorde<\/em> directed by Ada Gay Griffin and Michelle Parkerson (1995);\u00a0<em>Conakry Kas\u00a0<\/em>directed by Manthia Diawara (2005);\u00a0<em>Meet the Eye\u00a0<\/em>directed by Aida Ruilova (2009);\u00a0<em>Shadows of Liberty <\/em>directed by Jean-Philippe Tremblay (2012);\u00a0<em>The Start Up\u00a0<\/em>directed by Salim Akil (2014); and\u00a0<em>In the Morning\u00a0<\/em>directed by Nefertite Nguvu\u00a0(2014). His\u00a0writing has been published in various publications such as Black Popular Culture, edited by Gina Dent (1992), and Everything But the Burden, edited by Greg Tate (2003).<\/p>\n<p><b>Christina Sharpe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an associate professor at Tufts University in the department of English and the programs in Africana, American, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She is currently working on a book called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Wake: On Blackness and Being<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her first book<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monstrous Intimacies: Making Post-Slavery Subjects <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was published in 2010 by Duke University Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tourmaline <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a trans activist &amp; artist, working as membership director at the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. Tourmaline\u2019s work has been featured in Barnard College\u2019s\u00a0The Scholar &amp; Feminist Online, as well as\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captive Genders: Trans Embodiement &amp; The Prison Industrial Complex,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post Post Script Press\u00a0and\u00a0Randy Magazine. She recently wrote, directed and produced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Birthday Marsha!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a short film about legendary trans activist Marsha P. Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Tavia Nyong\u2019o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a cultural critic and an Associate Professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University. He writes on art, music, politics, culture, and theory. His first book,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amalgamation Waltz: Race, Performance, and the Ruses of Memory <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Minnesota, 2009), won the Errol Hill Award for best book in African American theatre and performance studies. He is completing a study of fabulation in black aesthetics and embarking on another on queer wildness.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The event is sponsored jointly by the Barnard Center for Research on Women in conjunction with the Practicing Refusal Working Group, and the International Center of Photography&#8217;s Center for Visual Culture.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free and open to the public.
