Join us for an urgent conversation with Robyn Maynard, author of <\/span>Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present <\/span><\/i>(Fernwood 2017), about similarities and differences in histories, tactics, modes, and consequences of state violence targeting Black communities in the U.S., Canada and at the border, articulating critical questions and strategies for cross-border solidarity, organizing, and resistance in the current political moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Robyn Maynard<\/strong> is a Toronto-based writer and the author of\u00a0Policing Black Lives: State violence in Canada from slavery to the\u00a0present<\/em>\u00a0(Fernwood 2017. The book is a CBC national bestseller, currently in its third printing, and has been widely acclaimed since it\u2019s release, designated as one of the \u201cbest 100 books of 2017\u201d by the\u00a0Hill Times,\u00a0<\/i>shortlisted for an Atlantic\u00a0Book\u00a0Award, and the winner of the 2018 Annual Errol Morris Book Prize. The book is also a finalist for two Quebec Writers Federation awards, the Concordia University First Book Prize and the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction. This work received a starred review in\u00a0Publishers Weekly\u00a0<\/i>as well as glowing coverage in\u00a0the\u00a0Toronto Star<\/em>,\u00a0the\u00a0Globe and Mail<\/i>,\u00a0Now Toronto,<\/em>\u00a0Maclean\u2019s,<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Ottawa Citizen.<\/i>\u00a0In the words of the\u00a0Winnipeg Free Press:<\/i>\u00a0\u201c\u201cEvery Canadian \u2014 black, white, Indigenous or otherwise \u2014 could benefit from reading Maynard\u2019s frank and thorough assessment of racism in Canada.\u201d In October 2018 \u00a0the book was published in French with M\u00e9moire d\u2019encrier:\u00a0NoirEs sous surveillance. Maynard has published writing in the\u00a0Washington Post, World Policy Journal,\u00a0<\/i>the\u00a0Toronto Star,<\/i>\u00a0the\u00a0Montreal Gazette TOPIA,\u00a0<\/i>Canadian Women\u2019s Studies<\/i>\u00a0journal, as well as an essay for\u00a0Maisonneuve Magazine\u00a0<\/i>which won the acclaim of \u00a0\u201cmost-read essay of 2017\u201d.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0Her writing on race, gender, and discrimination is\u00a0taught widely in universities across Canada and the United States. \u00a0Her expertise is regularly sought in local, national and international media outlets and\u00a0<\/i>she has spoken before Parliamentary\u00a0subcommittees\u00a0and the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent.<\/div>\n

Maynard\u00a0has a long history of\u00a0involvement\u00a0in\u00a0community\u00a0activism and advocacy. She been a part of grassroots movements against racial profiling, police violence,\u00a0detention and deportation for over a decade and has an extensive work history in harm reduction-based\u00a0\u00a0service provision serving sex workers, drug users, incarcerated women and marginalized youth in Montreal. \u00a0 Recently, she helped develop the Black Indigenous Harm Reduction Alliance, a group of Black and Indigenous women and two-spirit people providing workshops to incarcerated women.<\/div>\n
