After redlining was formally prohibited the same racist structures and individuals remained intact, and close relationships between regulators and the industry created incentives to ignore improprieties.\u00a0Meanwhile, new policies meant to encourage low-income homeownership created new methods to exploit Black homeowners. The push to uplift Black homeownership descended into a goldmine for realtors and mortgage lenders, and a ready-made cudgel for the champions of deregulation to wield against government intervention of any kind. Narrating the story of a sea-change in housing policy and its dire impact on African Americans, <i>Race for Profit<\/i> reveals how the urban core was transformed into a new frontier of cynical extraction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor<\/strong> is assistant professor of African American studies at Princeton University and author of <em>From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation<\/em> (2016) and <em>How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective <\/em>(2012).\u00a0<em>Race for Profit\u00a0<\/em>was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button warning radius\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/race-for-profit-tickets-88528367731\">RSVP TO ATTEND<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This event is free and open to the public.
