Triggered by the September 16, 2022 murder in police custody of a young Iranian Kurdish woman, Jina (Mahsa) Amini, a multiethnic uprising led by young women and girls quickly swept across Iran, gaining widespread support from many men. For the first time, explicitly feminist demands for women\u2019s bodily autonomy from the state and for gender and sexual equality in all aspects of life was at the center of a movement that called for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. Marginalized ethnic and religious populations, as well as queer and trans Iranians, have been at the forefront of this uprising. The Iranian state has responded with tremendous brutality, killing hundreds of protesters in the streets, arresting thousands, torturing prisoners, and carrying out official executions. Yet, the protests, reflecting broader social and cultural transformations, continue in different forms, including in daily acts of mass civil disobedience in which women refuse to wear mandatory hijab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"128:0\">Please join us for a wide-ranging discussion with <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:1\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">Bahareh Badiei<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:2\">, <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:3\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">Kiana Karimi<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:4\">, <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:5\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">N. of the Begoo Collective<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:6\">, and <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:7\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">Fatemeh Shams<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:8\">, moderated by <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"128:9\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">Manijeh Moradian<\/strong>. These activists, scholars and artists have been involved in building transnational feminist solidarity and who will talk about the impact of the women, life, freedom (jin, jiyan, azadi) movement on Iranian society, on the Iranian diaspora, and on their own lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bahar(eh) Badiei<\/strong> is a Ph.D. student in the Journalism and Media Studies Department. Her research interests include feminist media theory, dialectics of digital activism, and the MENA region. Her work, in particular, examines how transitional diasporic projects for and about Iranian women may simultaneously reproduce imperialist practices and contribute to neo-Orientalism while rupturing the violence of such agendas and opening spaces for genuine maneuvers of feminism. She seeks to produce public-facing knowledge that disturbs the simplified mediation of MENA region women. Before her immigration to the US, she completed her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in Communication Studies in Iran and worked as a freelance journalist. In her second master\u2019s degree in the US, her research focused on the ways in which the Muslim Ban influenced the possibility of transnational familyhood for US-based Iranian students.<\/p>\n<div><strong>Kiana Karimi<\/strong> is a PhD candidate in Performance Studies and a doctoral\u00a0fellow at the Urban Democracy Lab at New York University. Her\u00a0dissertation research focuses on the micropolitics of everyday life\u00a0and the performance of gender in Iran. Her research interests include\u00a0digital humanities, gender politics, the performance of everyday life,\u00a0performance philosophy, immigration and transnational identity, and\u00a0the Iranian diaspora. She has directed a series of digital\u00a0publications for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) and\u00a0has moderated and taught online workshops for women in small towns in\u00a0Iran about tools and techniques for participation in the city council\u00a0elections. Combining her background in engineering, web design and her\u00a0decade-long experience as a women\u2019s rights activist, she has\u00a0developed the first-ever eyewitness reporting and networking platform\u00a0for Farsi speakers (TribuneZamaneh.com) as an alternative to\u00a0commercial and insecure platforms such as Facebook. As part of Barzan\u00a0Gender in Translation Program, she has translated over 30 journal\u00a0papers from English to Farsi in an accessible language for grassroots\u00a0activists. For her fellowship at the Urban Democracy Lab, she is\u00a0developing a digital archive to showcase the music and musicians of\u00a0the Bronx for the Bronx Music Heritage Center. Her writings have been\u00a0published the <em>London Review of Books Blog<\/em>, <em>Women Learning Partnership,<\/em>\u00a0<em>RadioZamaneh<\/em> (fa) and <em>We Change<\/em> (fa) among other outlets.<\/div>\n<p><b>Manijeh Moradian<\/b>\u00a0is assistant professor of Women\u2019s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her book,\u00a0<i>This Flame Within: Iranian Revolutionaries in the United States,\u00a0<\/i>was published by Duke University Press in December 2022<i>.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0She has published widely including in\u00a0<i>American Quarterly,<\/i>\u00a0<i>Journal of Asian American Studies, The <\/i><i>Scholar &amp; Feminist Online, and Women\u2019s Studies Quarterly.<\/i>\u00a0She\u00a0is a founding member of the Raha Iranian Feminist Collective and on the editorial board of the Jadaliyya.com Iran Page. She is a member of Feminists for Jina, a global network which formed in fall 2022 to support the women, life, freedom uprising in Iran.<\/p>\n<p><b>N. of the Begoo Collective<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A collective of Iranian feminists inside and outside of Iran, Begoo Collective is invested in cultivating a transnational dialogue, particularly among the people of the Global South, in solidarity with the uprising of the Iranian people, especially Womxn, the LGBTQ+, and all marginalized communities. Centering JIN J\u00ceYAN AZAD\u00ce (Woman, Life, Freedom) and in a fight against systemic historical erasure, through a feminist, anti-colonial, and transnational lens. Begoo Collective strives to amplify the Iranian people\u2019s acts of bravery and resistance and to archive the violence and oppression their bodies continue to endure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"211:0\"><strong data-slate-leaf=\"true\">Dr. Fatemeh Shams<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"211:1\"> is associate professor of Persian literature at University of Pennsylvania.. She earned her Ph.D in Middle Eastern Studies from University of Oxford, Wadham College. Before joining Penn, she has taught Persian language and literature in various academic institutions including University of Oxford, University of SOAS and Courtauld Institute of Art in the United Kingdom. Shams is currently the Humboldt Foundation-EUME fellow hosted by Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin in 2021-2024 to work her second book project on the work and life of exiled Iranian poets.
