Announcing leadership transitions

Dear Friends,

As the semester draws to a close, we are reflecting on another inspiring year of lectures, conferences and informal gatherings, publications, curricular initiatives, and scholar-activist collaborations that have pushed us to consider, respond to and engage in practices of critical intervention as well as community care. It’s been a momentous year of many changes. Thank you to all of those in our community who participated and contributed to our work. I write you now to share two important changes that will take place in the coming months at BCRW.

The first is a bittersweet change. Although it seems like just yesterday that I stepped into the director’s chair, this year marks my fourth year leading the incredible work and team at BCRW. My term comes to an end in July, and I have decided to take this opportunity to pass the baton on to a new leader. I am delighted to announce that Elizabeth Castelli, Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Religion at Barnard, will be joining the team as Interim Director starting in July. Elizabeth is a long time member of our Advisory Board, an extraordinary scholar and life-long activist, and served as Interim Director of BCRW in 2011-2012. It gives me great satisfaction that I will be leaving the Center in such capable hands.

Needless to say, this was a difficult decision to make. I have loved leading and expanding BCRW over the past four years, and it has been both gratifying and thrilling to oversee its expansion through the development of new initiatives like the Social Justice Institute, the Harlem Semester, the Poverty and Housing Working Group, the Practicing Refusal Working Group, the digitization of the BCRW archives, the expansion of our digital productions and communications, and so much more. It has been nothing less than inspiring to watch our audiences grow both on campus and online, bearing witness to the continued relevance of BCRW’s work for scholars, students, artists, activists, cultural workers, and other visionary thought leaders in our broad community. Finally, it has been deeply satisfying to build strong financial and institutional support for BCRW’s mission through the acquisition of major grants and establishment a thriving endowment, ensuring BCRW’s continued success into the future. Here, I must add that I am deeply grateful for the support we have also received from individual donation, which sustain our programs on an ongoing basis. I would be remiss if I did not encourage you to continue making these invaluable contributions to support BCRW’s continued success.

Our growth, strength, and stability as a unique feminist institution has been a team effort. I have both the wonderful BCRW Advisory Board and our amazing staff to thank for that. We are extremely well-positioned to continue to grow and to thrive, and I know Elizabeth will steward BCRW to the next stage in its marvelous future.

Which brings me to the second change. This summer, BCRW will move to our new office space in the brand new Milstein Center on the Barnard Campus, which is scheduled to open in August. While we are sad to say goodbye to our historic home in 101 Barnard Hall, we are thrilled occupy an expanded set of offices and meeting rooms to accommodate our expanded work and communities. We look forward to sharing the new space with you in the coming years.

For now, I simply want to say an immense and enthusiastic thank you. Thanks to the entire BCRW community of activists, scholars, students, artists, colleagues, collaborators, and friends for the incredible support and confidence you have shown me. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as BCRW Director. I look forward to our continued collaboration wearing other hats in the future.

With warmest wishes,
