Queer Anti-Militarism Townhall: Trans Liberation Not U.S. Invasion
Featuring Micha Cárdenas, Soya Jung, Nikkita Oliver, Matt Remle, Dean Spade, + Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. Recorded at the Seattle Public Library on April 2, 2018.
In the wake of Trump’s trans military ban, the media has been filled with patriotic and pro-military images of trans military service. But what about how we hate war and militarism? In this town hall, speakers explore queer and trans resistance to militarism and the racist, sexist, transphobic, and environmental violence of U.S. imperialism.
As Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore says, “There’s so much cognitive dissonance when people say they support trans military inclusion but not war. What do they think the military is for? Or when people say the military helps trans people escape poverty without mentioning the ways the military creates poverty. No one should have to join a murderous regime to escape a scary home, pay for college, or get out of a deadend town.”
