This will be the second bi-annual gathering for Black/African Descent Lesbians* and supporters to responsibly consider and engage important issues that can strengthen and support our individual and collective community work. Our 2018 conference will:
- Have and expanded schedule to accommodate more activities and an increase in attendance.
- Continue to be a safe and welcoming space for attendees, presenters, and supporters.
- Offer an increased number of scholarships so more persons have the opportunity to attend.
- Present content that will address the next phase of priorities for Black/African Descent lesbians.
Conference presentations will address the theme, “Work As Memoir” in these areas:
- Defining, Reclaiming and Owning our work. – Identify the work that preceded us, who performed the work and why this work was necessary.
- Explore how our work provides solutions to our unique needs and challenges.
- Working Smart – Doing the work without sacrificing our physical emotional and spiritual selves.
- Individual and collective work as a living memoir and how it creates a foundation of others to build on.

About
Even with more resources being dedicated to LGBTQ issues, Black/African Descent lesbians are still consistently marginalized with few public spaces dedicated to addressing issues unique to us. This marginalization unfortunately continues in shared Black LGBTQ spaces and in lesbian specific/welcoming or women-only spaces which frequently address “women of color” issues but refuse to genuinely address the unique challenges Black/African descent lesbians constantly face. This results in Black/African descent lesbian lives, issues and contributions being systematically minimalized or dismissed and with this marginalization, comes less to no funding or other resources to support solutions to this problem. alyce d. emory and Kim L. Ford, two NYC community workers & activists, developed Beyond Bold And Brave, as a possible solution.
Beyond Bold And Brave works to increase the visibility of Black/African Descent Lesbians* in our communities by supporting and producing programs, projects and events that responsibly and truthfully affirm and represent Black /African Descent Lesbian life, work and identity. We define Black/African Descent Lesbians* as a diverse community of women who are: part of the African diaspora including Black, African, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Indigenous, Afro-Latina, Afro-Asian, Afro-European; identify as transgender, cisgender, gender non-conforming, queer, same-gender loving as well as additional identities; and are attracted to and/or have relationships with women.
